How I got Started In Leatherwork

In 2013, while trying to learn new skills for off grid living, a deer hide was given to me to practice tanning. I did pretty well on it, but did not know what to do with it afterwards. I had no idea how to make things from leather. I had never even thought about it. So, I decided it would just hang on the wall as a decoration. I few weeks down the road, I was with my wife in Hobby Lobby as she was trying to find suppies for a project for her interior design class. I happened to stumble upon the leathercraft section! Aha!!! I picked up a few tools and starter kits, went home, and made some little key fobs and stuff from scraps.

Well, I realized that I really enjoyed working with leather. I found out about Tandy Leather while doing some research on how to do leather work. Fortunately there is a store in Birmingham, Alabama only about 45min from my house. My wife and I drove down to have a look around. I ended up buying a bunch of tools and leather pretty quickly. I practiced and practiced, and got better as time went on. So, I decided to turn my new-found hobby into a business!
